Exterior of St. Mary's | ||

As a result of prejudice against Catholics and the bigotry of the church, Pugin was unable to, or at least seldom asked to do work on Anglican churches. However here we have a rare example of art and adventure rising above elderly men in cassocks.
The photograph on the left has a small turret projecting from the porch roof this is in fact a chimney for the fireplace installed by Pugin in the porch! As we know Pugin said one could not pray if one was cold. |

Stained Glass | ||

The vicar of St. Mary's from 1835 to a year after Pugin's death 1853, was Henry Alford, he was unafraid of the church's hierarchy and asked Pugin to restore the church.
The church was given a new roof, new stained glass and new pews. The chancel was renovated. Wailes and Hardman both made glass for the windows. |
