An Original

These drawings by Pugin are on very delicate tracing paper, part of which he has coloured with rich blue, red and gold. What the design was going to be used for and at what stage in his life he created it is unclear, possibly it was done for a window.

The design is fourteen inches by fourteen inches with a cross in the middle. The drawing is in pencil and then overdrawn in ink. The seated angel's banner says St. Matthew, the lions banner says St. Mark.

The small middle drawing above is from the border of the picture, where Pugin has practiced in pencil, parts of his creature's anatomy. The hoofed animal's banner says St. Luke and the eagle says St. John.

These writings and drawings were from around the outside of the picture. The middle drawing is a practice for the lions foot.
