He entered J.D. Seddings office in 1886, Sedding had been articled to G. E. Street who was well versed in Gothic architecture and design. Philip Webb also worked in Street's office, and they all knew William Morris. Gimson was one of the furniture designers who set up the company Kenton & Co. in 1890. He worked on decorative plaster work for William Lethaby's house in Hampshire.

He met William Morris with Norman Shaw in Street's office. In 1859 he was commissioned by Morris to build The Red House, Bexley Heath, Kent (right), which remains a cornerstone in the history of English domestic architecture. Morris and Webb became lifelong friends and collaborators.
Webbs other houses included Glebe House (left)(it does not seem to have retained it's name) in London 1868-71 this was a studio house built for the artist George Boyce. Smeaton in Yorkshire 1877, Clouds in Wiltshire, 1880 and Standen in East Grinsted 1891.
