| In 1844 Pugin began work on St. Nicholas Church for Lord Midleton. Lord Midleton, 5th Viscount was a member of the Cambridge Camden Society, and a great reader of books on landscape design and architecture. He had a good idea of what he wanted and who would be able to execute his wishes. |

Pugin was asked to create a Norman chancel arch which he was not to keen to do given his feelings on pointed Gothic architecture. However he has produced a beautiful arch which took a lot of time and money and Myers was still asking for payment when Lord Midleton died in 1848.
As if to point out that pointed arches were preferable Pugin built the left aisle with Gothic arches. |
